With a third solo film on the way from Marvel, fans are preparing to say goodbye to the current Guardians lineup as the trilogy comes to a close. Before the final curtain call though, Disney and Marvel are attempting to do something that has never been done before - take characters from a beloved space-based film franchise and make a wacky Holiday Special.
Well, never done right. But unlike the Star Wars Holiday Special, The Guardians of The Galaxy Holiday Special looks to have an actual budget, a fun story, and a tone that perfectly fits the irreverent feel of the franchise.
A Christmas Gift from Marvel & Disney +
Director, Screenwriter and Producer James Gunn has called The Holiday Special "the greatest thing I’ve ever done in my life” so the Elf Squad certainly has some high hopes for this one. The story revolves around the team trying to cheer up Peter Quill, sorry Star-Lord, (Chris Pratt), who is still upset about losing Gamora (Zoe Saldana) in Avengers: Endgame. It looks as though Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel) plan some Christmas festivities while Drax (Dave Bautista) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) travel to Earth to kidnap Kevin Bacon (Kevin Bacon).

Rockin' Around The Christmas Groot
One of the most memorable aspects surrounding The Guardians of the Galaxy has been the "Awesome Mix" of music on the films' soundtracks. The Holiday Special will likely feature some great deep cuts of nostalgiac pop / rock music, and hopefully some obscure Christmas classic. The special is also set to feature an appearance by alternative rock band, Old 97's, although it is not yet clear how they will play into the story.

While Christmas has played a part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the past, most notably in IRON MAN 3 and HAWKEYE on Disney Plus, this is the perfect time for the big guy in red to make his debut. And no, we are not talking about Deadpool,
In Marvel Comics, Santa not only exists, but he is also an Omega level mutant making him one of the most powerful characters in the comics universe. This makes sense considering all that he can accomplish - knowing if everyone is naughty or nice, travelling the whole world in one night, shapeshifting to fit down chimneys, etc. While it may sound ridiculous, so does this overall project so you never know.
